Sports Coaching Courses

Are you passionate about sport? Get a head start in the industry with the Diploma of Sport Development and become part of the rewarding sports and fitness industry.

This qualification provides the skills and knowledge for an individual intending to pursue a career in sport development and coaching. Flexible study options are available, offering both on campus or online study options to provide this industry recognised qualification. Once you have become qualified you could find yourself working as a sport development officer for a national sporting body, a competition manager or a talent identification manager.

    > Entry Requirements : The minimum entry requirements for the course are:

    • Completion of a Year 12 Higher School Certificate (or equivalent). Note that students who are under the age of 18 at course commencement may require an interview with ACNT to assess their suitability for the course; OR
    • Mature age entry (for applicants aged 21 years or over at course commencement).

    There are no formal prerequisites for this course although you should have an interest in both sport development and coaching and enjoy working with groups.

    This subject covers:

    • The skills and knowledge required to provide information about performance enhancing and prohibited drugs to athletes
    • The skills and knowledge required to implement strategies to assist athletes to effectively address drug usage issues.

    Nutrition

    This subject covers:

    • The skills and knowledge required to enable coaches to develop strategies to support their athletes to apply the principles and practices of nutrition to achieve peak performance

    Coaching Practices 1

    This subject covers:

    • The skills and knowledge required to develop and apply legal and ethical coaching practices that comply with specific sport or activity best practice principles
    • The skills and knowledge required to develop coaching session plans and select and apply coaching methods appropriate to the needs of junior sports players
    • The skills and knowledge required to develop coaching session plans
    • The skills and knowledge required to deliver coaching sessions
    • The skills and knowledge required to implement strategies to improve coaching sessions.

    Coaching Practices 2

    This subject covers:

    • The skills and knowledge required to develop and apply legal and ethical coaching practices that comply with specific sport or activity best practice principles

    Sport Psychology

    This subject covers:

    • The skills and knowledge required to enable coaches to support their athletes to apply the principles of sports psychology to their specific sporting activity
    • The skills and knowledge required to assist athletes to implement and evaluate psychological approaches to optimise their sporting performance.

    Introduction to Marketing

    This subject covers:

    • The skills and knowledge required to identify, evaluate and take advantage of marketing opportunities by analysing market data, distinguishing the characteristics of possible markets and assessing the viability of changes to operations
    • The skills and knowledge required to determine the optimum marketing mix for a sporting program or business through analysis of inter related marketing components.

    Consumer Behaviour

    This subject covers:

    • The skills and knowledge required to analyse consumer behaviour to target marketing to specific markets and specific needs.

    Project Management

    This subject covers:

    • The skills and knowledge required to scope, implement, monitor and evaluate project-management plans
    • The skills and knowledge required to run an event, ensuring all project goals are met.

    Team Management

    This subject covers:

    • The skills and knowledge required to facilitate all aspects of teamwork
    • The skills and knowledge required to take a leadership role in the development of team plans, leading and facilitating teamwork and setting performance goals
    • The skills and knowledge required to develop and facilitate team cohesion
    • The skills and knowledge required to liaise with stakeholders.

    Customer Service Management

    This subject covers:

    • The skills and knowledge required to plan to meet internal and external customer requirements and ensure delivery of quality services.

    Law, Risk and OHS

    This subject covers:

    • The skills and knowledge required to implement occupational health and safety (OHS) policies, procedures and programs within the context of an established organisational OHS system
    • The skills and knowledge required to develop, implement and evaluate a risk-management program for a sporting event
    • The skills and knowledge required to apply legislation relevant to organisational operations.

    Use advanced features of computer applications

    This subject covers:

    • The skills and knowledge required to use a range of computer applications employing advanced features.

    Manage meetings

    This subject covers:

    • The skills and knowledge required to manage a range of meetings including overseeing the meeting preparation processes, chairing meetings, organising the minutes and reporting meeting outcomes.

    Team Selection Policies

    This subject covers:

    • The skills and knowledge required to utilise selection criteria and policies to make team selection decisions .
    • The skills and knowledge required to consult with relevant personnel to select teams.
    • The skills and knowledge required to convey selection criteria and policy to potential team members.

    Athlete Recovery

     

    This subject covers:

    • The skills and knowledge required to identify the signs and symptoms of overtraining and under-recovery in athletes.
    • The skills and knowledge required to enable coaches to support their athletes to apply the principles of recovery to their relevant sporting activity.
    • The skills and knowledge required to assist athletes to implement and evaluate recovery methods after training or competition to optimise subsequent sporting performance.
