This subject will provide you with the skills and knowledge required to provide basic advice on dietary modification according to established nutritional medicine principles and practice. |
Disease Manifestations |
Disease Manifestations aims to provide the student with a solid understanding of pathophysiology of the various body systems, and the signs and symptoms of conditions affecting these body systems. It will build upon the knowledge gained in Anatomy & Physiology, and Chemistry & Biochemistry, and teach the student the basis of clinical reasoning, leading into later subjects which cover case taking, pathology testing, physical examination, and the art and science of diagnosis. |
Counselling Skills |
In this subject students will learn the essential strategies of effective communication with patients. You will learn how to identify and respond to the queries, fears, and special needs of patients, and how to use basic counselling skills to facilitate treatment with the context of natural therapies. |
Nutritional Principles |
This subject will examine the context of naturopathic nutrition, in particular the concepts and philosophies behind naturopathic nutrition. You will also be briefly introduced to some of the methods of nutritional assessment, including diet diaries and questionnaires. Additionally the role of nutritional medicine practitioners in the community and as part of the health care system will be examined, and the student will learn about some of the legal and ethical requirements of nutritional medicine practitioners. |
Nutrition 1 |
In this subject students will learn about the important biochemical and physiological roles of proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids, building upon the knowledge gained in Chemistry & Biochemistry. Disorders related to macronutrient imbalances, such as starvation and wasting diseases will be discussed. |
Basic Microbiology and Infection Control |
Basic Microbiology & Infection Control teaches the student how to avoid and deal with potential infectious hazards in the clinical environment. |
Nutritional Patient Assessment |
This subject will cover the art and science of case taking and physical examination. You will gain the ability to develop a probable diagnosis and prognosis to then allow treatment to proceed. |
Nutrition 2 |
Nutrition 2 will take the student into the realm of micronutrients and accessory nutrients. For each vitamin and mineral you will learn about its role in biochemistry and physiology, the signs and symptoms of deficiency and toxicity, as well as its activity as a medicine. |
Nutritional Pharmacy |
Nutritional Pharmacy will introduce you to the complexities and regulatory requirements behind the manufacture and supply of therapeutic products in Australia. You will learn how nutritional products are manufactured, and the requirements manufacturers and product sponsors must do to meet to be able to put products on the Australian market. You will also learn the basics of manufacturing your own nutritional therapeutic goods for your patients. |
Advanced Nutritional Medicine |
Advanced Nutritional Medicine teaches the core of nutritional therapeutics. You will cover body systems and disease states, the impact of diet and nutrition on the prevention and management of those diseases. The use of nutritional supplementation and specific dietary modification to treat these diseases will also be covered. |
Health Business Skills |
Successful practice involves more than just being a good clinician. This subject will introduce you to the skills of small business management – how to set up and grow your business, how to manage finances, develop and implement promotion strategies and work with colleagues in a shared business. |
Critiquing Research |
This subject will introduce you to the realities of evidence-based practice by looking at scientific and research methodology, how to recognise both poor and high quality research, and then how to integrate that information with your treatment strategies. |
Nutrition for Special Populations |
Nutrition for special populations focuses on specialised nutritional needs for population groups. The subject covers lifecycle nutrition and health conditions affecting the subsets. The use of nutritional supplementation and specific dietary modification to enhance wellness and treat diseases will also be covered. |
Professional Development |
Professional Development advances the skills and knowledge required to initiate and maintain continual development of professional skills and knowledge in Complementary Healthcare. This subject contributes to the knowledge base of specific healthcare practice. |
Referrals in Health Care |
This subject will provide you with the skills and tools to determine when referral is appropriate, determine what type of health professional is required, and establish a line of communication, which includes referral methods. |
